Why the (Hilbert) Stress-Energy Tensor is Covariantly Conserved

In general relativity, the same covariant conservation law for the stress-energy tensor of the matter fields can be derived using either of two different methods. One method relies on the equation of motion for the metric field, and the other method uses only the equation of motion for the matter fields. This article explains why both methods lead to the same conservation law.
